RYA Motor Cruising Day Skipper Practical Training Course

The course aims to teach pilotage, navigation, seamanship and boat handling to the standard required to skipper a motor cruiser safely by day in tidal waters with which the student is familiar.  Over the 4 days of the course you will also receive an introduction to making a passage at night. Costing £799 per person.

We would advise all students to have some boating experienceto ensure that they gain the most from this course. A minimum qualification of a Powerboat Level 2 certificate is essential, but completing the RYA Helmsman course course is advised.  Knowledege to at least Day Skipper Theory is also advised.  As motor cruising courses are not cheap due to the size of boats we have to use, this preparation will maximise your learning experience.

The course is taught on our Nimbus 370 Commander fly bridged motor yacht which is an excellent forgiving vessel for learning on.  We are currently adding our Jeanneau Prestige 36 to our training fleet and this, where possible, will allow us to run the last day of the course on her, giving you the student a chance to widen your experience further of large motor yacht handling.

We can run the course with upto 4 students which ensures the boat has enough crew allowing the instructor to concentrate on the teaching of the student on the helm. Areas covered on the course are:-

Preparing the boat for sea.

Handling the boat including turning in a confined space, coming alongside and mooring to a buoy.

Navigation including plotting visual fixes, use of waypoints, tidal heights and streams, course to steer, buoyage and electronic aids.

Pilotage for leaving and arriving at ports, harbours and marinas etc.

Passage planning taking into acount the limitations of the crew and boat, tides and weather.

Understanding weather forecasts and charts.

Rules of the road for preventing collisions at sea.
