We offer the RYA VHF short range certificate radio course from classrooms in Lymington & Southampton at a fixed price of £99 per student. This includes the £30 RYA fee for a license certificate.

Our Southampton base is situated within Ocean Village marina which offers a mixture of bistros and restaurants together with mainline railway connections to London and the south.

The training classroom is within the Lymington town sailing club which itself offers a fantastic dinning room with Solent views. The facilities are open for you to use during your course as you have guest membership for the duration of your RYA VHF radio course.

Marine VHF SRC Radio Certificate

Many water users do not know that in order to use a marine VHF radio that they must have a VHF radio qualification such as the RYA short range certificate. Also, all marine radio equipment including portable units must be registered with Ofcom.

Course topics include:

  • the basics of vhf radio operation
  • the correct frequencies (channels) to be used
  • distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures
  • making ship to shore telephone calls
  • Digital Selective Calling (DSC) using simulators
  • Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
  • Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB)
  • Search and Rescue (SART)

The course will be taught using radio simulators and will be examined by a short written test.
