Then moving on to a new Solent location for afternoon drinks onboard or at a waterside pub before returning to our home berth for about 5.30pm. Just 18 miles from our base in Lymington is the historic naval dockyard of Portsmouth with the more leisure boat focused Gosport directly opposite. On a clear day you can actually see the famous Spinnaker Tower situated in the regenerated area of Gunwharf Quays from the entrance of the Lymington river. If we travel east from Lymington and pass close to Cowes we reach the eastern Solent. With many large freight carrying ships in the busy Southampton water mixed with the passenger ferries crossing to various ports on the Isle of Wight and the hundreds of pleasure craft based in Cowes, Gosport and the Hamble river it makes for a very interesting approach to the narrow entrance to Portsmouth waters. As the harbour holds the bulk of the British Naval fleet the entire area is controlled by the Queens Harbour Master "QHM". We keep well to the port side of the main channel as we enter ensuring that we do not get in the way of the larger shipping.
